The Coimbatore District Collector reassured the public that all emergency forces and necessary equipment are ready in Coimbatore Corporation to tackle the Northeast monsoon.
Coimbatore: The District Monitoring Officers Darez Ahmed and Vanniya Perumal, and Coimbatore District Collector, Sameeran inspected the Northeast monsoon preparations in Coimbatore on Thursday morning at Valankulam and Trichy Road, Ramanathapuram.
Briefing the media after the inspection, the District Collector stated that they had inspected the ponds in Coimbatore along with Vanniya Perumal today and precautionary measures are being taken in the city, as per the orders of the Government of Tamil Nadu to monitor relief work and preparations, due to the onset of the Northeast monsoon.
"With an 'orange alert' issued for Coimbatore district, special monitoring authorities have made preparations and adviced public on how to deal with the impact of the Northeast monsoon, even though it has not rained as much as expected, till now. As for the city of Coimbatore, all departments are ready to face the Northeast monsoon.
Of the 23 ponds in the Noyyal river area, 22 ponds have reached 100 per cent capacity. These pools are being properly monitored and checked for blockages.

Surveillance arrangements have been intensified in the low-lying areas of the Mettupalayam area due to floods in the Bhavani river," detailed the District Collector.
In response to a query on traffic congestion caused by rainwater stagnation at various places in the city of Coimbatore, such as Uppilipalayam and Kikani School road during each monsoon, the District Collector said that he had made 24-hour monitoring arrangements on behalf of the Corporation. "Public Works Officers have been appointed to monitor the water tanks in the Corporation area. In addition, Zonal Deputy Commissioners have been appointed on behalf of the Corporation to repair traffic caused by water stagnation.
The Chithirai Chavadi Dam, the Central Dams, Pillur and Aliyar have been closed to tourists. Also, bathing and taking selfies have been banned in the Kutralam area of Coimbatore. High power pump sets are ready in the Corporation areas. Also, to cope with this Northeast monsoon, all the equipment and officers are on stand-by in Coimbatore. Today, special officers are scheduled to visit medical camps in municipal and rural areas," assured G S Sameeran.
