Coimbatore: Police are searching for three people, including a woman, who allegedly swindled Rs.6.5 lakh from a retired sub-inspector for allegedly promising to set up a cell phone tower.

Amanullah (61) is from Periyar Road, Mettupalayam, Coimbatore district. He retired as a Sub-Inspector in the Coimbatore Armed Forces. In December last year, a message came to his cell phone WhatsApp number.

It stated that the rent would be paid monthly if space was provided to set up a cell phone tower. Believing it to be true, Amanullah contacted the WhatsApp number. The person who spoke against it will be given an advance of Rs 30 lakh and a monthly rent of Rs 30,000 if he provides space to set up a cell phone tower. But he has said that he has to pay Rs.6,53,750 in advance to the bank account he claims.

Believing it, Amanullah paid Rs.6,53,750 into the bank account number mentioned by the unidentified man. After that there was no information regarding setting up the cell phone tower. Thus, the victim contacted that Whatsapp number but it was switched-off. After that he tried several times and could not contact that number. Realizing that he had been deceived by this, he lodged a complaint with the Coimbatore District Cyber Crime Police.

Inspector Jayadevi filed a case and conducted an investigation. It was revealed that Sujith Kumar, Poonam Devi and Karandeep Singh were the three persons who cheated Amanullah. Following this, the police are searching for the trio.
