Fireworks sales slump by 20 percent in Coimbatore due to rains and court ban on crackers sales

It is reported that customers who used to buy crackers for Rs.5000 previously bought only Rs.1000 to Rs.2000 this year leading to a slump in sales.

Coimbatore: One of the main traditions of Diwali, the festival of lights is the lighting of fireworks to celebrate the killing of Narakasuran. However, with recent bans on fireworks and emphasis on keeping the environment pollution-free, firework sellers are lamenting that there has been a 20 percent decline in firecracker sales this year, both due to court orders and rains.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the bans on sale of firecrackers for Diwali this year, has led to a considerable decline in the sale of crackers. New varieties of crackers, like the green crackers were manufactured to keep people interested. But dealers staate that sales have been down by 20 percent comapred to last year's sale.

Umashankar, owner of Goodwill Crackers store in 'Poo Market' area, opined, This year, sales are down by 20 percent from last year. People had cash in hand even during the first wave of Covid-19. This year's sales are very dull. Customers who used to buy crackers for Rs. 5000 previously bought crackers only for Rs.1000 to Rs. 2000. Hence, sales have been pretty much dull.'
