9 accused in Pollachi sexual assault case appear before Coimbatore Women's Court via video conferencing

The case has been adjourned till November 11.

Coimbatore: The infamous Pollachi sexual assault case came up for hearing at the Coimbatore Women’s Court on Tuesday evening (November 2).

The nine accused who are currently inmates of Salem Central Jail and Gobichettipalayam Branch Jail in Erode District were produced before the judge via video conferencing. Judge Nandhini Devi adjourned the case till November 11.

The Pollachi sexual assault case came to light after a 19-year-old college student filed a complaint in February, 2019 of being sexually assaulted by four men who also took a video of the assault and blackmailed the victim, threatening to share the video if their demands for money were not met. After the victim confided to her parents, her brother was assaulted by the accused's friends and thereafter a police report was filed and four of the accused were subsequently arrested.

Following the arrests, media reports unearthed the organised sexual abuse racket that had been operating in the state, reportedly since 2013 and that hundreds of women were victimised.

The case was first investigated by the CB-CID police and was later transferred to the CBI. Thirunavukarasu, Sabari Rajan, Vasanthakumar, Satish, Manivannan, Arul Anand, Babu, Arunkumar and Haran Paul have been arrested in connection with the case. The case is pending in the Coimbatore Women's Court.
