Shanmugam (50) is from Vadavalli, Coimbatore and is a goldsmith by profession. Sathyamangalam purchased gold from Erode, converted it into gold and sold the pieces of jewellery in Coimbatore.

He went to Sathyamangalam in Erode district and bought his own gold. He made pieces of jewellery and sold it to shops in Sathyamangalam. Shanmugam went to Sathyamangalam and bought 2 kg of gold and came to Coimbatore at night.
He then left Gandhipuram for home on his motorcycle. While he was riding on his motorcycle from Gandhipuram towards Vadavalli, two people followed him on another motorcycle. Both of them were wearing helmets. When he came to Thondamuthur, two persons who were behind him suddenly overtook Shanmugam's motorcycle and blocked him. Then they got off the motorcycle and rushed towards Shanmugam and took the knife they had hidden and threatened him to hand over the gold.
They then snatched 2 kg of gold, Rs 7 lakh in cash and a cellphone from him. Then they pushed him down and left the scene of crime and fled away from the place. Shanmugam got up, ran and tried to catch them. But the two of them escaped at lightning speed on the motorcycle they came on. Shanmugam lodged a complaint with the Vadavalli police. Police are investigating the incident. They are also investigating if any surveillance cameras are installed in the area.
The robbers staged their plan knowing that Shanmugam was buying and selling gold. Police suspect that they may have been following him for several days and someone else is involved in the incident. Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation by scanning surveillance camera footage.
