2-kg of the yellow metal looted from trader near Vadavalli, Coimbatore

Police on search for robbers who attacked a jeweller who threatened to stab him with a knife and snatched 2-kg of gold, Rs 7 lakh in cash and a cellphone from him.


Coimbatore: Police are on lookout for robbers who attacked a jeweller by brandishing a knife and snatched 2 kg of the yellow metal, Rs 7 lakh cash and a cellphone from him.

Shanmugam (50) is from Vadavalli, Coimbatore and is a goldsmith by profession. He visits Sathyamangalam in Erode district and purchased gold, converts it into jewellery and sells them to shops in Sathyamangalam.

Shanmugam went to Sathyamangalam yesterday morning, bought 2 kg of the yellow metal and arrived in Coimbatore at night. He then left Gandhipuram for home on his motorcycle. While he was travelling on a motorcycle from Gandhipuram to Vadavalli two persons followed him on another motorcycle. Both of them were wearing helmets. When he came to Thondamuthur, the two men behind him suddenly overtook Shanmugam's motorcycle and stopped him. Then got off the motorcycle and very quickly came towards Shanmugam brandishing a knife they had hidden and said that they knew that he had gold. They asked him to give it to them and leave.

But they attacked him, threatening to stab him if he refused to give it up. The two men took away 2 kg of gold, Rs 7 lakh in cash and a cell phone from him. Then they pushed him down and fled from there. Shanmugam got up and ran and tried to catch them. But the two men escaped at lightning speed on the motorcycle they came on. Shanmugam lodged a complaint with the Vadavalli police. Police are investigating the incident and looking for any surveillance camera installed in that area.

The robbers staged their plan knowing that Shanmugam was buying and selling gold. Police suspect that they may have been following him for several days. The police are continuing to investigate to determine as to who are the robbers. The team is investigating to learn if there are more than two people involved in the incident.
