The Food Safety Department officials seized 780 kg of sweets and savouries from shops around Pollachi town during a food inspection.
Pollachi: Food Safety officials seized ₹ 2 lakh worth of sweets and savouries from shops in and around Pollachi region on Sunday. The seized food items were buried in the ground.
The food security officials have been conducting a series of field inspections as per the orders of the Commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Administration. Headed by District Appointing Officer Dr. Tamilselvan, officers Subburaj, Veluswamy, and other officials, the team inspected shops including bakeries, sweet, savoury vendors, restaurants located at Coimbatore Road, Udumalpet Road, Ramakrishnanagar, Jyotinagar, Suleswaranpatti, Meenkarai Road, Market Road, Venkatesa Colony, Perumal Chetti Road, etc., in Pollachi.
The officials conducted a check at 18 shops in the Pollachi area and seized food items with repackaging, improper labels, food items packed using old newspapers, items containing excessive chemical synthesizers, and over-sweetened food. These unhygienic food items, weighing 780 kg, worth ₹.2lakh, were buried in the ground and the officials demolished them by pouring phenyl on them.
Food samples were collected from the food items with excess sweet, repackaged foods, and packets with unclear detailing in the labels and have been sent for testing. Legal action will be taken against companies found guilty as per the food safety act, based on the results.
Coimbatore District Appointment officer, Tamilselvan stated, “Milk sweets are edible only for one to four days. After four days, bacteria is formed which makes them inedible and poisonous. Food items have to be sold on the same day they are prepared. The oil used for preparing food items must not be reused. The State Food Safety Department is implementing a scheme to collect once-used cooking oil and recycle bio-diesel from it. The department plans to monitor restaurants, bakeries, and fast food manufacturers. To convert used oil into biodiesel, you can contact 90877 90877, 84455 17187, 73395 30143.”
