Coimbatore: The Communist Party of India, CPI staged a protest here at the South Taluk Office condemning the fuel price hike. The agitators laid a tilak on the cylinders and sang ‘oppari’ on Saturday.
The demonstration was staged today in front of the South Taluk office against the hike in petrol, diesel, and gas prices. The increase in petrol and diesel prices has led to an increase in the prices of essential commodities and the risk of affecting daily life. Fuel and cooking gas prices inflate on a daily basis.
In particular, the Union Government's tax on petrol was ₹.9.20 in 2014 and has now gone up to ₹.32.90. Similarly, the Union Government's tax on diesel has increased from Rs.3.46 in 2014 to Rs.31.80 in 2021. In the past 7 years, the union government’s tax has increased by 258 percent on petrol and 819 percent on diesel.
