Coimbatore: Farmers petitioned the District Collector to cancel the proposal to acquire agricultural land to set up an industrial estate in Annur next to Coimbatore.
More than 200 farmers gathered at the District Collector's Office and submitted their petition to Coimbatore District Collector Dr.G.S. Sameeran.
TIDCO's Principal Director, through the District Collector, had sought from the Government of Tamil Nadu, through the District Collector, to grant administrative approval for the acquisition of approximately 1,504 hectares of land in the areas comprising 2 Revenue Villages in the Mettupalayam Circle, 4 Revenue Villages, in the Annur area next to Coimbatore. At the farmers' grievance camp held at the Coimbatore District Collector's Office, the farmers fell at the feet of the District Collector and filed a petition seeking an injunction to stop the acquisition of agricultural land to set up a workshop in the Annur area.
According to the petition, the livelihood of about 50,000 people living in the slums around Annur is dependent on agriculture. Agricultural labourers depend on the agricultural work done here. Farmers are waiting for their 70-year-old dream project, the Avinashi-Athikadavu project. The resolution not to acquire agricultural lands was passed in five panchayats and brought to their attention. More than 1,000 applications were sent to the Chief Minister. Also, on 02.10.2021, the black flag was hoisted on agricultural lands and houses in a democratic manner and the matter was brought to the notice of the government.
It is unfortunate that no formal government announcement is made. The petitioners, therefore, sought an order from the Government to issue a legal notice to the farmers that the land would not be acquired and that the industrial project would be cancelled.
