Rotten eggs distributed to students under midday meal program in Tirupur

75 students who benefit from the midday meal program in the Corporation Primary School in Tirupur were in for a shock when they saw worms in the eggs that were distributed.

Tirupur: There are 143 students studying in the Corporation Primary School functioning in the 18th Ward Vavipalayam area under Tirupur Corporation.

Of these, 75 students benefit from the midday meal program. During the first week of each month, the children are provided with rice, 10 eggs, 1 kg of oil and pulses to ensure that they receive sufficient nutrition even during the Covid-19 pandemic period when schools were shut.

Accordingly, students under the midday meal program were asked to be at school on Thursday to receive the food items for the month of October. When the students returned home, they were shocked to find that they had been given rotten eggs with worms in them. Parents, public and social activists were enraged at this and have expressed strong opposition citing that rotten eggs could even endanger the lives of children.

They demanded that Government authorities take immediate action regarding the reprehensible incident. Following this, nutrition security officers conducted an inspection at the school and submitted a report to the District Collector, S Vineeth. Also, the nutrition program for this school had not been assigned by the school authorities for the last five months.

A source belonging to the Vavipalayam Primary School teachers said that since the staff at the primary school had been going to the nearby Vavipalayam High School to cook for Grade 9 and 10 students since September 1, last year, staff from another school had been called in to distribute eggs and supplies since there was no supervisor at the primary school.
