Social Activist express dissatisfaction as Coimbatore Corporation fails to take action on encroached lands; petitions detail encroached lands
Coimbatore: Social activists have urged the Coimbatore Corporation to take action on recovering the encroached sites in the city.
Until 2010, Coimbatore Corporation was divided into 72 wards under four zones. Post expansion, Coimbatore Corporation was expanded to 100 wards with 5 zones. A total of 1,450 reserve sites are available in five zones, according to the Coimbatore Corporation website.Based on before and after expansion, the details of the 150 reserve site sites that are occupied till now have been uploaded to the Corporation’s Official website. Besides, the details of occupants in each ward and the details of occupied sites, and their usage details have also been entered on the site.
The market value of the encroached sites to this date is ₹250 crore. The activists expressed dissatisfaction stating the Municipal Corporation for not taking appropriate action to restore the encroached sites.
Social activist Thiyagarajan said, 'As per the official announcement made on behalf of the Corporation in 100 wards of the expanded Coimbatore Corporation, 25 acres of land are now occupied in 150 reserve site sites. They have a market value of more than Rs 250 crore.Only 10 percent of these cases are in court. The remaining 90 percent of reserve site occupations continue to run by the encroachers to date. Also, many people have been earning revenue for ten years through internal renting in these reserve site areas owned by the corporation'
Several encroached sites are yet to be identified by the Corporation Administration goes. The market value of these sites, if added with the identified sites would be worth ₹500 crores. The reserve site should be an open area, or parks should be constructed for children. Besides, the motor room and toilets shall be constructed in a small area. No construction is permitted on a large scale. The activist lamented that no action has been taken so far by the Coimbatore Corporation.
Despite multiple petitions, and applications to RTI to seek information on the details of 150 occupied sites, Thiyagarajan has not been provided information. He urged the district administration, to act expediently on the matter.
