Coimbatore Government Hospital doctors praised for successful removal of lung

Surgeons successfully removed lung of a patient to arrest effect to heart and other parts in the body, thus giving the patient a lease of life.


Coimbatore: The dean lauded the doctors who had achieved the feat of removing the lung of a person suffering from pneumonia at the Coimbatore Government Hospital.

According to a statement issued by the Coimbatore Government Hospital, L. Govindarajan (37), a resident of Mettur Chinnasuraikai area in Salem district, was admitted to a private hospital in Coimbatore for corona virus infection on 17/4/21 and was sent home after treatment. He has been undergoing treatment for diabetes for 6 months. He was later admitted to a private hospital in Salem for bleeding in the mucus and was diagnosed with a fungal infection called mucus infection in his left lung.

Later, the patient was referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital and was admitted to the hospital here. The 37-year old male patient was transferred to the Department of Cardiac Surgery on 28/9/2021. The doctor who examined him confirmed his condition.

Furthermore, mucor mycosis occupied the entire lower part of the left lung and damaged the lungs. The surgeons decided to remove the part of the lungs from the heart around the other part of the lungs and to prevent it from spreading further into the blood vessels and to save his life. The surgery was performed on his left lung on 30/9/2021.

This surgery was performed by College Principal Professor Nirmala MS, DGO, Head of Cardiac Surgery Head Srinivasan MS., MC Head of Anesthesiology Department Kalyana Sundaram MD., Department of Cardiac Surgery Assistant Professor Anesthesiology Department Arvind MS, MCH, Prince MS, MCH, team consisting of Prof. Satish MD, Nurses Thangakodi Kasukibhakiyam., Mallika, Shakila Banu, Reena, Ambika, Tamil Selvam and Praveena.



The patient is fine. The operation was performed completely free of charge under the chief minister health insurance scheme. It is worth mentioning that undergoing the same procedure in a private hospital can cost around Rs 3 - 5 lakhs.
