Diwali season crowds resuscitate business for textile shops

The textile industry is overjoyed at brisk business for the Diwali season after a lull of two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Coimbatore:The Diwali season has given the textile industry much to rejoice as crowds in Coimbatore district throng shopping areas after two years of a business lull since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The tradition of buying new clothes during Diwali season has boosted domestic textile sales.

The Indian Tex Federation (ITF), Convenor, Prabhu Damodaran said, "On the occasion of Diwali this year, the sale of textile products has increased in the state as well as the country. Women and children who were disinterested on purchase of clothes due to the pandemic are now keen on making mass purchases. This results in a large sale of fashion garments in the category.

Similarly, office goers have resumed working at their offices which has subsequently increased the sale of formal and casual clothes. The work-from-home attire like t-shirts and shorts sale has declined. On the whole, this festive season has achieved good growth in the Indian domestic textile industry. All the industries in the textile industry chain are happy with this,” added Prabhu Damodaran.

Further, Arulmozhi, Administrator of the Tamil Nadu Open End Spinning Mills Association (OSMA) said, "The Diwali season has surged the sale of yarns are produced with waste cotton received from spinning mills and is done in open end spinning mills. Various textile products including bed sheets, pillowcases, towels, jean fabrics are produced with the yarn made from open end spinning mills. The demand for all the above textile products has now increased in the market since the outbreak of the pandemic.”

Also, the shoppers this year seem to be more interested in buying 'Made in India' and 'Made in Tamil Nadu' textile products. Men, women and children are all keen on buying textile products printed with 'Made in India' and 'Made in Tamil Nadu' tags. Although most textile products are manufactured in India, there is now an increase in demanding for the above mentioned tags in the clothes being purchased, unlike the indifference in the past.
