Pollachi: Onion vendors in Pollachi dumped rotten onions on roads as a major part of the stock had rotted due to heavy rains that have lashed Pollachi in the past few days.
The onion market near the Pollachi Gandhi Market has an inflow of stock from various districts of Tamil Nadu as well as other states, including Andhra Pradesh. Most of the stock is sent to Kerala. The prices of small onions had depreciated to ₹.20 in the past week. Apart from various districts in the state itself, there was increase in the inflow of big onions stock, especially from parts of Maharashtra.
Vendors lamented the depreciation of the price of onions. The Bellary onions sold for a maximum of Rs.25 per kg. However, since the beginning of this month, widespread rains have affected onion harvesting in various districts of Tamil Nadu. The process of sending stocked onions to the market for sale had intensified. Meanwhile, heavy rains also caused rotting of onions, including the Bellary and small onions from other states and districts.
