CITU protests in Coimbatore condemning outsourcing sanitary work to private hands

The CITU on Monday protested in Coimbatore against the Municipal administration for outsourcing sanitary works to private parties.

Coimbatore: CITU members staged a demonstration condemning the municipality for ‘outsourcing’ sanitary works to private hands.

An emergency circular was issued to all the municipalities and corporations by the Municipal Administration Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

In the circular, it was stated that for 2 people per 400 houses in the corporation, one health worker for 1,200 houses in municipalities, one member per ward in Corporations to clean the streets, 2 per ward in municipalities, four people to maintain a bus stand in the proximity of eight kilometres are recruited. In the circular it was also stated that the wages payable shall be ₹.391.

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions members demanded that the circular must be reversed. They added that there is a mismatch between the number of sanitary workers and the population.

They stated that the Government of Tamil Nadu is taking retrenchment measures instead of making new appointments and is trying to provide sanitation works to private hands by outsourcing. They demanded that the sanitary workers have to be appointed according to the population.

The agitators further demanded that the employees working on an agreement basis should be given permanent jobs. The demonstration was held in front of the Coimbatore South Taluk office.

Raja Kani, District Deputy Secretary, Coimbatore Rural Development & Panchayat Raj Department headed the demonstration. Association President C Padmanabhan, General Secretary K Rathinakumar addressed during the demonstration. A large number of cleanliness workers, including union members Ganesan, Veerasamy, participated and raised slogans condemning the municipal administration.
