Over 30 members of the transgender community submitted a petition requesting to help them secure loans for starting a businesses on their own that will help them change the way a majority of people from the community live.
Coimbatore: More than thirty members from the transgender community submitted a petition to the Pollachi Sub-Collector, seeking support in acquiring loans and free pattas. With the loan obtained members of the transgender community will set up their own businesses that will help them live a decent life.
Over 100 members from the transgender community from in and around Pollachi receive alms from people near shopping areas, bus stands and other public areas to make a living. While very few work as cooks, a majority of them are involved in prostitution or they chose to beg. They lament that they are denied loans from the banks if they approach the financial institutions seeking help for starting a business on their own.
Thus, more than 30 from the transgender community submitted a petition at the Sub-Collector’s office in Pollachi seeking measures to enhance the livelihood of members of the transgender community. They demanded that they should be provided loans for starting up small businesses like starting an eatery on the roadside.
They also demanded that houses should be constructed for members of the transgender community who have been provided with house site (patta). Through the petition, it was demanded that the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu should take steps to provide old-age assistance to members of the third gender community who are over 60 years of age.
