The 3-month old twins were reportedly attacked by the mentally deranged grandmother who ended up killing the baby boy at Cheran Nagar in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: Thudiyalur police have arrested and jailed a mentally unstable woman who allegedly attacked her three-month old twin grandchildren in Coimbatore, which ended in the gruesome death of the baby boy.
Baskaran and Aishwarya are residents of 3rd Cross Street, Nagappan Colony, Cheran Nagar in Coimbatore and parents to 3-month old twins, a boy named Aryan and a girl named Aarika Sree.
The couple who were in Madurai had arrived in Coimbatore just two months ago. Aishwarya's mother Shanthi was also brought from Madurai to look after the children and had been staying with them for the past two months. On the night of October 21, when Aishwarya had stepped out to buy medicine and returned, her mother Shanthi told her that someone had taken the children away. When Aishwarya searched for her children, the boy baby was found dead in a pool of blood on the bed and the girl baby was found covered with a compress cloth inside the toilet, in their home.
A shocked Aishwarya immediately informed her husband Baskaran and they lodged a complaint at the Thudiyalur police station. Meanwhile, Shanthi escaped from their home. The Thudiyalur police rushed to the house and rescued the injured baby girl, and sent her to a private hospital for treatment. Later, the deceased baby boy's corpse was sent to a Government hospital for autopsy.
Following a police investigation, it was discovered that the grandmother Shanthi who had killed her grandson and attacked her granddaughter had been suffering from mental illness for many years. The police then set up a team to search for Shanthi to arrest her, and based on CCTV footage at the scene of the crime, a through investigation is being carried out.
Since Shanthi's husband was working as a Special Sub-Inspector at the Madurai Police Station, the police combed both Madurai and Coimbatore during their search operation. They discovered on Monday morning that Shanthi was at a relative's house in Madurai and immediately arrested her and brought her to Coimbatore.
Subsequently, during the interrogation at the Thudiyalur police station, Shanthi confessed that she could only recollect until the day when her daughter had gone out to a drug store and on returning had hit her mother. Shanthi seemed to have no recollection of what had happened in between. The police team arranged for a medical examination for Shanthi, and produced her before a judge and lodged her at the Coimbatore Central Jail.
