Corporation officials state that 700 to 800 tonnes of garbage is being cleared daily from the Vellalore landfill through bio-mining.
Coimbatore: Efforts to clear garbage from the Vellalore landfill through bio-mining has been intensified. From the 100 wards in Coimbatore Corporation, 800 to 1,000 tons of garbage is being collected daily and dumped in a Corporation-owned 650-acre landfill in Vellalore. In one part of the landfill, 9 lakh metric tonnes of unsorted garbage is stored in an area of 60 acres which is reportedly causing a stench in the area, along with infestation of flies.
The Corporation administration has decided to dispose of the huge pile of waste by bio-mining. For this purpose, a project of Rs. 60 crore has been prepared and is being implemented by a private organization, which would serve to reduce the amount of accumulated debris.
