Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) organized a bone density deficiency camp on Friday at the Hospital campus.

To raise awareness on bone health, the deficiency in bone density, and measures to overcome them, a camp was organized at the campus of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on behalf of the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department. In the Osteoporosis awareness programme a total of 200 people, including 110 women, 90 men were screened for the mineral density of their bones. People who were detected with less density were prescribed medications, diet suggestions (calcium-rich food), and exercises.

Dean, Professor A. Nirmala of the CMCH inaugurated the camp and distributed the pamphlets to the public.

She explained the complications and prevention methods. The bone density of a person decreases as the person grows older or due to menopause. However, it has now become a complaint due to unhealthy diet habits and is detected for people of young age. This weakness in the bone makes it prone to fractures. Awareness is the need of the hour, and 200 medical students and over 500 general public were made aware about Osteoporosis.

The programme was headed by Professor S. Vetrivel Chezian, Director, Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, orthopedic Associate and Assistant Professors, Post Graduates, and medical students participated in the event.
