The Salem City Police Commissioner has ordered the suspension of Armed Forces Special SI, Subramaniam, Police Prabhu, Velkumar, Rajkumar, Natarajan, Rajesh Kumar and Karthi for violating rules and allowing convicts to meet and talk to relatives while on the way to jail.
Coimbatore: There has been a controversy over Salem police allowing the accused arrested in the Pollachi sexual assault case to meet and talk to relatives on their way to jail. As many as 7 policemen who had given concessions to the culprits are suspended.
9 were arrested in Pollachi sexual assault case in Coimbatore district. For the trial, 9 people were produced in the Coimbatore Magistrate's Court yesterday. After the investigation, they were taken in two vehicles from Coimbatore to Salem Central Jail last evening.
At that time, the vehicle of Thirunavukarasu, Sabarirajan, Vasanthakumar, Satish and Manivannan, who are named as the prime accused in the case, was suddenly stopped near the Nilambur toll gate in Coimbatore. On the roadside, the relatives of these five were waiting for them. Video footage of relatives conversing with inmates in the vehicle has sparked controversy.
Following the brief meeting and interaction, the vehicle departed. The special concession offered to them by the Salem Police has sparked controversy. Those who wish to interact with convicts must submit a petition. However, the act of deliberately halting the vehicle in a low-traffic area, by the Salem Police and permitting the relatives to meet and speak with the convicts has raised several questions.
This has prompted the Salem City Police Commissioner to order the suspension of Armed Forces Special SI, Subramaniam, Police Prabhu, Velkumar, Rajkumar, Natarajan, Rajesh Kumar and Karthi for violating the rules.
