Coimbatore: A consultative meeting was hosted in Coimbatore with accredited trade union executives. A decision was taken to launch ‘Save NTC’ in an attempt to protect National Textile Corporation Limited (NTC) factories.
C. Padmanabhan, the meeting convenor stated that there are 23 Cotton factories under the National Cotton Corporation of the Union Government across the country.Seven out of the 23 factories are located in Tamil Nadu, of which five of them function in Coimbatore. NTC factories were closed in March, during the first wave, which are yet to be reopened.
Padmanabhan mentioned that the NTC management pays full salaries to officials and workers are paid only half of their salaries. He urged to operate all the NTCs. The workers demand for payment of full salaries has fallen on deaf ears.
Furthermore, rumours are doing the rounds among workers and trade unions that the Union government is preparing to sell the NTC units and assets. Padmanabhan added that the Union Government continues to ignore the demands of the workers and hence a consultative meeting was held in Coimbatore with slogans stating, 'NTC Factories will be protected'
In the consultative meeting held in Coimbatore, executives from authorized trade union participated. Union officials from areas including Maharashtra participated in the meeting virtually. PR Natarajan, Coimbatore MP, Marxist Party member, chaired the meeting and union executives from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh were present at the meeting.
In the meeting, it was decided that a coordinating committee consisting of Members of Parliament in the states where NTC units are functioning will be constituted and will be named, 'Save NTC'. C Padmanabhan will serve as the convenor, Sachin Agir (Marathi) will be the chairman. K N Gopinath Assistant Chairman. P R Natarajan, M Shanmugam, Ilamaram Karim, and Members of Parliament from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh will take responsibility to implement the Co-ordinating Committee.
A protest will be held at the Central Government Office in the first phase. Furthermore, demonstrations will be held outside the Parliament during the Winter Session.

The LPF Punjab union president Parthasarathy, Nagendran, Pandian, CITU Mill workers union state president C Padmanabhan and executives Francis Xavier, Rajendran, and 26 union leaders participated in the meeting.
