Women in Somanur complain of not being able to use Chief Minister's free bus travel scheme for women

It is alleged by a section of people that that only luxury buses are available in Somanur. People in the area have demanded to operate regular buses with normal fare to be able to use Chief Minister's free travel scheme for women.

Coimbatore: Luxury buses are available from Coimbatore to Ukkadam and Kanchipuram via Somanur. A section of female passengers have complained that they are unable to take advantage of the free bus travel initiative which is implemented by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

As soon as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Stalin took charge, he ordered that women will be allowed to travel free of charge on ordinary city buses operated on behalf of the State Transport Corporation.

A section of women have complained that most of the government buses that are operating to Ukkadam Somanur and Gandhipuram Somanur are luxury buses. They allege, "Ordinary buses do not operate on the Avinashi Road route from Ukkadam. There are only 2 regular buses on the route to Somanur via Sulur. Mostly only luxury buses are available from Gandhipuram hence we are unable to use the government travel concession. The fare charged by the other categories of busses is alarmingly high. Thus, we request that buses in the regular category are operated on both routes."

Meanwhile, a Government Transport Officer said, "Ukkadam Somanur, Gandhipuram Somanur, two buses which charge normal fare are currently operating on the stated route. Connecting buses to Nilambur. Suburban buses are also operational on the Somanur route besides the city buses. However, action will be taken after considering the request of the passengers."
