Protest staged against levying of business tax in workers’ daily wages in Valparai

Coimbatore: Valparai Tea Estate Workers protested in front of the Estate Management old Valparai Estate Office against deduction of Business Tax. The protest was led by President of Tea Estate Workers Association V. Hameed. Tea plantation workers protest was called for by all union leaders, denouncing the tax that is currently being levied in the daily wage.

There are about 62 estates in the Valparai area, which employee men and women workers. The workforce has been staying and working in the residential area. Valparai Municipality has been levying the business tax. Thus, the estate management is deducting the business tax from the salary of the workers’ who work in the tea plantations. About 150 to 200 rupees a month out of their daily wage, is deducted, which the workers collect twice a year in bulk.

Thus, the tea plantation workers are paid less. The tea estate workers do not have a permanent place to stay and work in their own places. Feeling the pinch, the workers in unison urged to repeal the business tax as almost all workers are working from the residential area provided by the estate administration.

All trade union leaders, led by Valparai Tea Plantation Trade Union President V Hameed today staged a protest in front of the old Valparai Estate Office demanding that the estate tax be paid by the estate management to the municipality.
