Fire and rescue offers are engaged in a search operation for a woman who reportedly drowned in the Chennanur valley at Mathipalayam. Sunday is day two of the search operation. More than 30 fire fighters have split into three groups and are searching in a boat in the nearby Chennanur pond.

Coimbatore: A woman, who was trying to cross a river near the south bank next to Thondamuthur in Coimbatore, was swept away. Search operation to locate the woman continued for the second day on Sunday.

It is raining heavily in various districts including Coimbatore. Due to the heavy rains in the Western Ghats, water is overflowing in small streams. In the canal in the south bank village next to Perur, the water was flowing, making it impossible for the public to cross.

Vijaya, (55), wife of Maruthan, a resident of Ambedkar Colony, Madampatti, Coimbatore, went to work on Saturday morning as usual. On her way back home, she tried to cross the Mathipalayam stream in the south bank village. Vijaya stumbled and fell into the stream. Heavy downpour increased the intensity of the water in the stream.

The women who accompanied her immediately informed the Perur police and fire department. The Thondamuthur fire brigade arrived there and initiated a search operation for Vijaya who was swept away in the floods. The search for Vijaya's body was hampered by continuous rains.

However, team of the fire and rescue officials continued their search in the Chennanur valley at Mathipalayam this morning.

More than 30 fire fighters have split themselves into three groups and are searching in a boat in the nearby Chennanur pond. Fire fighters have been engaged in a search hunt for nearly fifteen hours now.
