Despite heavy rains workers protest demanding that the Tata management cancels tax levied on wages

Despite heavy rains, a protest was staged in front of the group office demanding the Tata management cancels tax levied on wages.

Coimbatore: There are more than 60 tea estates in Valparai, Coimbatore district. These include the Tea Estates of the Government of Tamil Nadu and those of private players.

Of these, about 50,000 are employed as permanent and temporary workers. The workers of the Tea Plantation Corporation of the State of Tamil Nadu are not subject to tax on their salary. But in private tea estates the tax is levied on the wages of the workers. Various protests have been initiated on behalf of workers and unions condemning this tax.

However, the management of the Tata Tea Estate in Anaimalai continues to implement the tax on workers' salaries ignoring the demands of its workforce.

Condemning this, a section of tea plantation trade union groups in Valparai staged a protest in front of the Anaimalai Tata Tea Estate Group office in the Valparai Selalipparai area.

The protest was led by Valparai V. Hameed, chairman of the trade union coalition. Large number of trade union executives, including Salahuddin Congress U Karuppaiya Viduthalai Siruthaigal Tamil Nadu Veeramani, Kesavamarugan, EG Mohan, Manickam Periyasamy, LPF Vinodkumar K. Paramasivam and more than 500 workers participated in the protest.
