Police led by Sub-Inspector Marimuthu have so far arrested 4 teenagers involved in theft in local public transport during the Diwali crowds.
Coimbatore: With less than a month for the festival of lights and with relaxations of the lockdown restrictions, the inter-state movement of people has spiked.
Coimbatore is the shopping destination for people from smaller neighbouring regions. Taking advantage of the crowd, individuals and gangs from Madurai, Nilgiris and Dindigul, are reportedly in Coimbatore to try their luck to steal.
Coimbatore RSS is deployed to catch such gangs and break their modus operandi. Assistant Commissioner Manikandan has formed a team comprising Sub-Inspector Marimuthu, Constable Uma, Karthik and Bhupathi. The police officials in plain clothes travelled as passengers in local transport. At the Prakasam bus station near the town hall, the team got suspicious of the woman who got off the bus.
The team attempted to interrogate her. When the woman got wind of something is wrong and on seeing the police, she put her handbag down and fled the scene. However, she was chased, nabbed, arrested and interrogated. Upon searching the bag Rs 20,000 was found in it. Investigation revealed that the accused Parvathi (33), is from Madurai, who is currently staying in Coimbatore and is involved in theft in crowded places. The police confiscated the money and arrested her. She was later produced in court and remanded in custody.
Similarly, the special team of police who boarded a bus from Poo Market to Gandhi Park to determine if all is well. As the bus approached the poo market, a teenager neatly picked up a purse from a woman in the seat. Police arrested her and interrogated her.
