Attukal Tribes in Thondamuthur, Coimbatore perform special pujas for rain

The Attukal tribes, performed the special puja in the annual festival that the people perform as a ritual during the month of ‘Purattasi’


Coimbatore: The Attukal Tribes in Thondamuthur region in Vadavalli in Coimbatore celebrated their yearly festival in which special pujas were performed for rainfall.

The Attukal Tribal Settlement is located next to Thondamuthur in Coimbatore. The tribes celebrate every year a festival (thiruvizha) during the month of ‘Purattasi’. The festival is celebrated at the temple of Vettaikaran, the guardian deity of the group. The festival which was not celebrated for the past two years was resumed celebrations this year on Saturday.

A statue of Vettaikaran deity made of mud, along with a ‘mansatti’ mud bowl and a ‘Vel’, placed on a horse, was taken from the temple located in their locality to the temple in the hill region in Karuttiyammapadukkai. The tribals composed music with their traditional instruments to invoke the Lord and celebrated with loud music and crackers.



The deity’s eyes were kept unopened and it was opened after reaching the temple on the hills. The people then performed special pujas for rain. The festival will be followed by a ‘Kedavettu’ (goat sacrifice) ceremony and offer annadhanam to all the people of the town on Sunday.

The forest officials were also present during the festival. The special puja performed for rainfall is auspicious among the community’s annual festival.
