Karumathampatti, Karamadai, Gudalur, Madhukarai in Coimbatore have been upgraded to Municipalities and the Tamil Nadu Municipal Secretary has issued announcements.
Coimbatore: 19 Town panchayats have been upgraded to Municipalities in Coimbatore, Thiruvallur. The Tamil Nadu Municipal Secretary issued announcements of the municipalities, in which, Karumathampatti, Karamadai, Gudalur, Madhukkarai in Coimbatore have made it to the list.
The announcements were made in the Assembly to upgrade town panchayats to Municipalities and municipalities into corporations. As per the announcements, the government has formed Kumbakonam Corporation. The surrounding local bodies will also be merged with the upgraded municipalities. The Nagercoil Municipality in Kanniyakumari District was upgraded to Corporation in March 2019.
As announced in the Assembly, the Panchayats of Thengamputhur, Aalur Town Panchayats, Putheri, Tirupatisaram, Bhimanagari, Therekal Puthur, Mela Sankarankuzhi, and Kaniyakulam are incorporated into the Nagercoil Corporation. Dharmapuram is connected to Rajakamangalam Panchayat area. The corporation ward count will be allotted, boundaries will be defined and elections have been announced for the area.
Similarly, Manamadurai in Sivaganga district, Trichy - Musiri, Lalgudi,Salem- Taramangalam, and Idanganasalai Town Panchayats are upgraded to Municipalities. The panchayats to be merged in these municipalities will be considered later. Ponneri, Tirunindavur in Tiruvallur district, Tirunelveli - Thittakudi, Vadalur, Thanjavur - Athirapattinam; Tuticorin – Tiruchendur, Coimbatore - Karumathampatti, Karamadai, Gudalur, Madhukarai, Karur – Pallapati, Tirupur- Thirumuruganpoondi, and 12 Town Panchayats have been upgraded to Municipalities. No changes have been made to the boundaries of these Town Panchayats.
Yezhu Desam Town Panchayats at Kollangode in Kanniyakumari District, Two Municipalities have been formed in Karur District by merging Punjai Pugalur and Paper Mill Pugalur Town Panchayats.
A new Corporation has been formed by merging Dharasuram Town Panchayat in Thanjavur District with Kumbakonam Municipality. Elections will be held by alotting the ward for Kumbakonam corporation.
The order was issued by Municipal Administration Secretary Shivdas Meena.
