Global Handwashing Day was celebrated in Pullukadu, Coimbatore, children and adults informed about the importance of washing hands.
Coimbatore: Handwashing Day has been observed worldwide on October 15th every year since 2008, which was initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO).
On Global Handwashing Day, the WHO conveyed the importance of washing hands at regular intervals in order to stay away from infections like the corona virus.
Back home in Coimbatore, Global Handwashing Day was observed with an awareness campaign. As part of this, an awareness initiative on the necessity of hand washing was held today on behalf of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was organised for the general public in Pullukadu.
Children were informed about the importance and were trained on how to wash their hands for duration of 20 seconds. Participants were made aware on the importance of why not to grow nails, and were told about the consequences of not washing hands were.
Through song and dance, the message was conveyed to the public. Participating children went home with free nail clippers. A face mask and glycerin soap was distributed to the participants who were educated about the proper method of hand washing.
Viruses, such as corona virus, can spread by hands when they come in contact with infected objects. Kalpana said the organization created awareness amongst the public to wash their hands thoroughly to avoid spread of infections.
