Coimbatore: On the occasion of the Vijayadasami festival being celebrated at the Sri Ayyappan Temple on the Tirupur College Road, the Vidyarambham program for children is also being held. Vidyarambham introduces young children into the world of knowledge, letters and the process of learning. This involves a ceremony of initiation into the characters of the syllabary. The syllable 'Om' is being written on the tongues of children with a golden 'vel' on the occasion of Vidyarambham. Children are hand-held to write their first alphabets in rice. Over 500 parents attended the Vidyarambham event with their children.

With October 15, being the closing day of the Navaratri festival, it is marked as the beginning of the teaching of Vidyarambam to children and celebrated as Vijayadasamy. At the end of the program, the children were given notebooks and pens on behalf of the temple administration.
