Shasta M Raja, Treasurer, Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Producers Association (TANSPA) stated that with the new Power Purchase Agreement will open the doors of investment for those who are interested in investing in global solar power generation projects.
Coimbatore: Amid rumours of a power shortage across the country due to a slump in coal supplies, experts state that many investors worldwide will come forward to invest in a solar power project if the government implements a new Power Purchase Agreement in Tamil Nadu, the state which is a national leader in the non-conventional energy sector. Industry experts share the opinion that this could boost the output of the non-conventional energy sector by 5,000 megawatts in five months.

Shasta M Raja, Treasurer, Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Producers Association (TANSPA) said, Tamil Nadu excels in all types of non-conventional energy generation including solar and wind power. The state has the capacity to generate 3,000 MW of electricity in the solar power generation sector and another 9,500 MW in the wind power sector. However, for the last 3 years after 2018, the Tamil Nadu government has not implemented a new Power Purchase Agreement.
Thus, in 2018, the solar power generation sector structure was 2,500 MW. On the one hand, with the significant increase in electricity demand across Tamil Nadu, the underdevelopment of the non-conventional energy generation sector is a major obstacle to the development of the state, stated the Treasurer of TANSPA.
As there is talk of a power shortage across the country today due to coal shortages, stakeholders from the industry sector hope that the Tamil Nadu government will take the necessary precautionary measures in this direction.
He said, "The Government of Tamil Nadu should announce a new Power Purchase Agreement with the Department of Non-Conventional Energy. We also need to promote the Public Private Partnership programme. This will open the doors of investment who are interested in investing in solar power generation projects globally. Thus, in five months, there will be an opportunity to establish new infrastructure facilities to generate 5,000 MW of electricity under the non-conventional energy sector in Tamil Nadu."
The non-conventional energy sector, which has a variety of features including being non-harmful to the environment, will play a vital role in meeting future electricity demand. He said by keeping this in mind, it is necessary to give more importance to this sector.
