Coimbatore: A Special Child Care Center costing Rs.1.5 crores has been set up at the Coimbatore Government Hospital on Wednesday. Babies weighing less than one kg and exposed to different vulnerabilities within 28 days of birth are to be cared for at this Center.
To mark the 'World Hand Washing Day,' on October 15, the Coimbatore District Department of Medicine and Public Welfare, the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and the Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration launched projects on 'Food Distribution Without Waste' and 'Used Oil Reuse' at an event held in a private college auditorium in Coimbatore.
The Minister of Medicine and Public Welfare, M Subramaniam presided over the event. More than 100 school and college students participated in the event and explained the process of hand washing to create awareness about the importance of hand washing. Following this, he inaugurated the opening ceremony of the Special Infant Care Unit Extension Building at the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital premises.
Speaking to reporters after the events, M Subramaniam said, 'Major resolutions were passed in the last assembly session. Medical assistance was provided to the people through the 'Satre Kuraippom' program. Under the 'Upari Unavu' program, the Government, private and eco-friendly food and transportation vehicles at various locations are working well. Through the 'Used Oil Reuse' cooking oil is bought from large restaurants and converted into biodiesel. These are the three best-performing schemes in Tamil Nadu. In Brazil, the Guinness Book of World Records has set a world record for converting 550 tonnes of cooking oil into biodiesel in a single day.'
A vehicle was also launched on Wednesday for each of the five zones under the Corporation to go door-to-door and vaccinate the rest. 5.51 lakh vaccines had been administered through the five Mega Vaccination Camps in Coimbatore. Though fresh cases of Coronavirus had reduced, the number of tests being done had not reduced. In Coimbatore, 7,121 people have been vaccinated against Coronavirus through private contribution funds. 'Coimbatore is number one in Tamil Nadu in terms of successful vaccination. 93 percent have been vaccinated with the first dose and 37 percent with the second dose. Amma Clinic is a short-term project and that project is over and the medical staff who worked at the Amma clinic are currently involved in Coronavirus prevention work,' stated M Subramaniam.
Coimbatore District Collector G S Sameeran, Corporation Commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara and Government Hospital Chief Dr. Nirmala were present at the event.
