Disappointed over garbage dumped in open spaces residents of the area stated that there will be a “Garbage dumping protest” staged in the Corporation complex
Coimbatore: The locals of ward 74 of Ukkadam shared that on the cards is a “garbage dumping protest” at the Corporation office, if demands not met. This decision comes as according to the residents of the ward, no action has been initiated so far regarding the garbage dumped in the open in the area. To add on to their woos, the residents allege that they lack basic amenities. Lack of proper functional street lights in the area makes it easy for people to dump garbage after sunset and go un-identified.
The garbage, including meat wastes are being dumped in open spaces in the ward 74 of Ukkadam, which is becoming home to stray dogs and a breeding ground for mosquitoes, thus posing a threat for residents as the situation on ground zero attracts several other health issues. The locals, especially the women state that the Corporation continues to turn a blind eye to the issue.
They echo the sentiments that 'corporation workers never come to the area to collect garbage, nor are the concerned workers attempting to clean the sewage canal. We ourselves clean the drainage. Multiple requests have been made to the corporation who has given zero solutions to the issue, which is highly disappointing.'
Mehjudeen of the area stated that there are 3,000 families and 10,000 people. She said, 'The Coimbatore Corporation continues to ignore the people of this area. With tons of garbage being dumped every day, sanitation is affected. The continuous rain in the city is further causing foul smell and is increasing the risk of spreading diseases.'
Lack of street lights in the areas is making it easy for dumping meat waste at night. The locals said that if the Coimbatore Corporation does not take immediate action, they would come together, pick up the garbage at their own expense, dump it in the Coimbatore Corporation premises and stage a protest.
