DMK members allege state election officer favoured the AIADMK candidate in vote counting exercise in Belladhi

The DMK members created a ruckus in the vote-counting office and threw away barricades

Coimbatore: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party members created ruckus in Belladhi village panchayat polling station which is located in Mettupalayam, alleging that the election officer is biased and favoured the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate in the vote counting exercise.

The rural local by-election was conducted on the 9th of October in the Thekkampatti, Velliyangadu, Belladhi Village Panchayats of Mettupalayam constituency. The votes were counted in Karamadai is a Town Panchayat Union Office on the 12th of October. Muthukumar of DMK got the maximum number of 185 votes and was declared the winner of the 15th ward member election in Thekkampatti Panchayat. Similarly, Murugammal of DMK was announced victorious in the 10th ward member election in Velliyangadu Panchayat.

The final round of counting was on for the Belladhi region, 3rd ward member seat. Suresh of AIADMK and Arjunan of DMK contested for the seat. Suresh was declared winner and Arjunan reportedly lost the battle with a thin margin of 6 votes lesser than his DMK counterpart. Unhappy with the results, DMK party members and loyalists demanded a recounting. A recounting was done in the presence of the Regional Development Officer and Election Officer Chandra.

This time, again, Suresh was declared the winner with a total of 372 votes, with seven votes more than the DMK candidate. A heated argument arose between the police and the DMK members. The DMK functionaries pushed open the office gates and held the Election Officer and Regional Development Officer Chandra, of favouring the AIADMK candidate.

The chaos intensified as the DMK members took to throwing barricades and blocked the Coimbatore- Mettupalayam road, which caused a lot of tension in the area for some time.
