Water level increases in Pillur dam, 8,000 cusecs water released, flood warning issued

The water level which was 83 feet in the past week is spiked to 97 feet, which has led to the issue of flood warnings.


Coimbatore:The water level in Pillur Reservoir has increased rapidly due to continuous rains. About eight thousand cusecs of water have been released and flood warnings have been issued to the public.

Due to heavy downpour in the Western Ghat region, the water inflow in the dam and the water level that was at 83 feet last week, had further increased to 86 on the 9th.With incessant rains in Nilgiris, the dam received 2,200 cubic feet water per second, stated reports. The water level in the dam, which is presently at 97 feet, will soon reach the maximum capacity. The PWD has issued flood warnings and has also released 8,000 cusecs of water at 1 pm this afternoon.

The Pillur Dam is situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats, Nilgiris near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district. The dam was constructed based on the catchment areas, western Ghat forests, and the rainwater in Kerala. The total capacity of Pillur Dam is 100 feet.
