Coimbatore: The Ukkadam police arrested a man and foiled an attempt to smuggle large consignments of banned gutka products, in Karumbukadai area of Coimbatore, today.
In the wake of increasing theft, burglary, robbery and drug trafficking in Coimbatore district, night patrols and vehicle inspections have been intensified.
Upon a tip-off from South Assistant Commissioner of Police, Manikandan of a speeding mini truck heading from Sundarapauram, the police team led by Sub- Inspector, Vivek of Ukkadam police station geared up to intercept the suspicious vehicle.
As expected the speeding truck arrived at Karumbukadai area. However, after seeing the police, the driver parked the vehicle and fled from the spot. The police immediately swung into action and nabbed a person who was in the vehicle.
Later, a search of the vehicle revealed that the duo had been smuggling drugs, including banned gutka and pan masala products. The value of the contraband are estimated to be around Rs.5 lakh.
More details will be released after investigation, said police sources.
