The Coimbatore Singanallur CPM City Council has urged the DMK Government to clarify their position on having promised to withdraw the Suez contract in their election manifesto.
Coimbatore: The CPM City Council urged for the Suez agreement for drinking water to be withdrawn and hand it over to the Coimbatore Corporation, at the 10th Congress of the Coimbatore City Council of the Marxist Communist Party which was held at Varadharajapuram.
Coimbatore MP P R Natarajan inaugurated the conference, while District Executive Committee Member K Ajaykumar addressed the conference.
New executives were elected at the conference. A 12-member city council, including V Devendiran was elected as the City Council Secretary. District Executive Committee Member K Manokaran addressed the conference. Earlier, various resolutions were proposed at the conference. The last AIADMK Government had handed over the right to supply drinking water to 100 wards of Coimbatore to a multi-national company called Suez. Parties including the Marxist party and the DMK had opposed and fought hard against this decision.
Due to this, cases were registered against the leaders of parties including CPM, DMK and Congress. The DMK had said in its election manifesto during the Assembly elections that it would cancel the drinking water supply contract with Suez since it had strong public opposition. They said the AIADMK government was ousted due to anti-people activities and the present DMK government has been elected.
There is an expectation on all sides that the DMK government will cancel the contract with Suez to fulfill the needs of the people. They also added that since Suez has been continuing its operations, the DMK government needs to clarify its position without delay. They demanded that the Coimbatore Corporation should be given the right to supply drinking water and not Suez.
The CPM City Council also added that there was always heavy traffic congestion at the junction of Singanallur Road, Vellalore Road and Trichy Road, inconveniencing school and college students, as well as the workforce. "As a solution to this, the Tamil Nadu Government should allocate funds and take steps to build a flyover in the area. As the population in the urban area of the city has increased, the increase in the number of sanitary workers are also required to meet the city's cleanliness needs.
It is worrying that the circulation of drugs among the youth has been increasing in recent times. This is why law and order has been compromised, while also taking into consideration the spate of burglaries in the city recently. The police should take measures including intensive patrolling to control this," reiterated the members of the CPM City Council.
Resolutions were passed at the conference, including the need to expedite the completion of SIHS overbridge and bring it to public use. Srinivasan delivered the vote of thanks at the conference.
