Tea plantation workers strike in Valparai demanding repeal of labor tax

The workers went on strike as there was no response from the administration. Valparai Workers Union Joint Committee members and union leaders held talks with the management of the Urulikkal tea estate.

Coimbatore: Urullikal Tea estate is located next to Valparai in Coimbatore district and it is owned by Tata. More than a hundred workers are employed in the second section of this Urullikal tea plantation.

They paid business tax from the salary to the municipality by the tea estate management. The tea estate management went on strike this morning demanding the abolition of the industry tax deduction from their salaries. They were also sent to work in alternative areas during the period when tea production in the area was declining. When sent to such work, it is customary to provide transportation to and from their place of work. Accordingly it was customary to unload the lorry to the place of work and to bring it back by lorry after the completion of the work.

Management has instructed workers to go to work in a new place but no other vehicle was arranged to go to work. The workers therefore complained to the Tea Plantation Officer for which the management said that no vehicle had been made and that he should walk and work. The workers then walked several miles and denied that they could work. They also demanded the abolition of the industry tax deduction.

The workers went on strike as there was no response from the administration.

Valparai Workers Union Joint Committee Chairman Valparai V. Hameed met in person and listened to their grievances.

Following this, Valparai V. Hameed, Chairman of the Union Joint Committee and Veeramani of Viduthalai Siruthaigal. INTUC Karuppaiya, IG Periyasamy, Manickam, MDMK Kalyani, DMK Senthil and union leaders met and held talks with the management of the Urulikkal tea estate. The workers returned to work in the afternoon following assurances that management would take appropriate action during the talks.
