Tomato plants submerged due to continuous rains in Kinathukadavu area - Farmers in anguish

Farmers expressed concern that those who planted tomato plants had suffered heavy losses due to the continuous rains. At the Kinathukadavu daily vegetable market, the price of tomatoes in the shops has gone up sharply as traders have been bidding up to Rs. 30 per kg.


Coimbatore: In Kinathukadavu area of Coimbatore district, next to coconut cultivation, tomato cultivation is being done mostly by farmers. In this condition the tomato plants cultivated in the vicinity of Kinathukadavu were ready for harvest and due to continuous rains in Kinathukkadavu area for the last 10 days farmers are suffering because all the tomatoes that were ready for harvest are rotting on the plants.

They used to cultivate tomatoes at a cost of 80 thousand rupees per acre. Farmers expressed concern that those who planted tomato plants had suffered heavy losses due to the continuous rains. Meanwhile, the price of tomatoes has gone up sharply as the supply of tomatoes to the Kinathukadavu market has been reduced due to the impact of continuous rains. At the Kinathukadavu daily vegetable market, the price of tomatoes in the shops has gone up sharply as traders have been bidding up to Rs. 30 per kg.
