Coimbatore predicted to receive less than average rainfall during NE monsoon

The city is slated to receive 320mm rainfall which means a -7 percent deviation.



Coimbatore: India experiences the North East (NE) monsoon between October and December. Based on the Southern Oscillation Index and Sea Surface Temperature values of Pacific and Indian Oceans by using Australian Rainman International V.4.3. Software at Agro Climate Research Centre, Directorate of Crop Management, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, the official prediction for the NE monsoon is presented at 60 probability level.

Normal rainfall is expected at Ariyalur, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Erode, Kanyakumari, Kallakurichi, Karur, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Namakkal, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Ranipet, Salem, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Theni, The Nilgiris, Tiruchirappalli, Tenkasi, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Tirupathur, Tiruppur, Virudhunagar and Vellore. Meanwhile, above normal rainfall greater than 10 percent from long term rainfall is predicted for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram.



Throwing light on numbers, it is learned that during the period, normal rainfall for Coimbatore is 343.7mm. However, according to the predictions, Coimbatore is slated to receive 320mm rainfall which means a -7 percent deviation. The state capital on the other hand is in for some rainy days ahead. While 782.3mm is the normal rainfall Chennai is to receive during the period, the city will receive 880 mm of rainfall, which means, there is a deviation of 12 percent.
