₹.1132 crores allotted fund for expansion of Coimbatore International Airport released on Monday by TN Govt.
Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Government released the allotted fund of ₹.1132 crores for the expansion of Coimbatore International Airport, much to the delight of industrialists.
Renovation and expansion processes had been on hold for the Coimbatore Airport for the past 10 years, due to delays in land acquisition. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M K Stalin allotted an amount of ₹.1132 crores last month for the expansion project which has been released on Monday by the Tamil Nadu Government. The city's industrialists welcomed the move.
In response to the TN Government's release of funds, the Kongu Global Forum (KGF) Director, D Nandakumar stated, “Coimbatore city, despite excelling in national and international business trades had limited operation of flights internationally which was a major bump in expanding international trade. The runway being comparatively smaller in area, limiting the operation of bigger flights and lack of infrastructure facilities to international standards were major issues faced by the industrial sector. The expansion works were on hold as the land acquisition was not complete. During the meeting held on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce of India last month, Minister Velu participated and displayed the orders issued for allocation of funds for the Coimbatore Airport's expansion project by the TN Chief Minister, in response to industry demand.
As per the orders, the Government of Tamil Nadu has released Rs.1,132 crores today. Thanking the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the KGF Director added that this has created a lot of confidence among the industrialists towards industrial development in the region.
The International Airport in Coimbatore services seven districts that include Coimbatore and othe districts around. Flights are operated between Coimbatore and Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and several other cities, while international air services are provided for Sharjah, Singapore and Sri Lanka. In view of further developments, the Coimbatore Airport expansion plan was announced during the DMK regime in 2010. Under this scheme, various development works were planned that included expanding the existing runway to 12,000 ft and improving various infrastructure facilities to meet international standards.
