Farmers demand that the government withdraw the new paddy procurement system at the Anaimalai Paddy Procurement Center

The new announcement blocking intermediaries will hit farmers hard. This doubles the cost of the vehicle and all the wages. Therefore, the farmers have demanded government should revert to the new practice and continue to buy paddy from undocumented farmers on the basis of the old system.

Coimbatore: The Consumer Goods Corporation of the State of Tamil Nadu procures paddy from farmers in the Anaimalai area.

The government has announced a new procedure for purchasing paddy from farmers this year. Accordingly, farmers have to register online to sell paddy at purchasing centers. They have to upload details like patta, survey number, area under cultivation, yield and date of harvest. The registration will go to the relevant VAOs. They will confirm and recommend whether the person concerned is a farmer, the land is his or hers, and the harvest is real. The farmer will then be issued a token and they have to go to the nearest direct paddy procurement center and sell based on the date and time allotted on the token.

Farmers have protested this and according to Anaimalai farmers, most of the paddy farmers are land leaseholders. There will be a difference between their name and the name on the patta so there will be the problem of not being able to make a purchase and everyone harvests at the same time. There will be a delay in getting the token from the Chamber of Commerce officials and VAO to check and recommend the documents to see if landowners have leased land.

Officials will not accept when the name on the land and the name of the lessee different. The new announcement blocking intermediaries will hit farmers hard. Harvested paddy should be kept safely at home or in the field and taken to the purchasing center after the allotted time. This doubles the cost of the vehicle and all the wages. Therefore, the farmers have demanded government should revert to the new practice and continue to buy paddy from undocumented farmers on the basis of the old system.
