Residing amongst different cultured villages disturb their practices and hence the tribes demand the ‘Thepakulam Medu’ area allotted for them
Valparai: The Kallar Adivasi tribes of the Valparai region went on a hunger strike on Saturday demanding the allotted area for their shelter at the ‘Thepakulam Medu’ region.
There are 12 groups of Adivasi Tribes residing around Valparai. Heavy rains in 2018 completely shattered the residences and shelters of the Kallar Tribe. There were subsequent landslides and other complications due to heavy rains. The tribes moved to a different area and a petition was submitted to the Valparai Tahsildar and the forest department were intimated as well
The temporary shelters of the Kallar Tribe were cleared stating NTCA should provide approval for the change of lands. The district Collector and Sub-collector, along with the district administration allotted the Thepakulam Medu area and forwarded the details to NTCA. In the meantime, the Kallar Tribe were accommodated at the vacant quarters of the tea plantation labor after having talks with the Thai Mudi estate management.
The tribes demanded a response on the allotted Thepakulam Medu area, which awaits a reply from NTCA. The tribes lamented that they have been living in the quarters for three years now which is affecting their culture facing quite the complications, especially the women and children. Change in food habits, the spread of Covid19 has created much fear amongst the group.
Demanding quick actions on obtaining approval from the NTCA, the tribes went on hunger strike on Saturday, with more than 200 participants. Valparai Tahsildar in charge of Muthukumar held talks with the people and in the absence of results, top officials, district collectors, and district forest officials held talks with them. Forest officials and police personnel were deployed on the spot for security purposes.
