‘Sigaram thodu’ Coimbatore Police to assist transgender community build careers

Three schemes formulated by the district police department, that will help the trans people upskill and earn a living for themselves

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Police have come up with three schemes, under ‘Sigaram Thodu’ that will help the transgender group in the city tackle their two major need, accommodation and job. District SP Selvanagaratnam stated to the press.

It is a customary sight in the city where most trans people are seen demanding alms in the signals. They tend to abuse the public if denied payment, which is a rising nuisance in the city. To overcome the situation and to especially help the community secure a decent living and position in the society, the district police have come up with initiatives.

Three hostels have been set up for accommodating them and the educated lot will be provided assistance in securing jobs that suit their qualifications.

The SP stated, “For the rehabilitation of transgenders, a scheme called 'Sigaram Thodu' ( touch the Peak) will be implemented. Three hostels have been organized for homeless transgenders. Many of the transgenders are literate. Employment will be provided as per educational qualifications. An employment camp for the same will be held soon. We are going to train and engage in the profession they know.

Apart from these, we plan to involve them in housekeeping, culinary, and servers in hotels. We have received 40 profiles with different skills”

The initiative will help the trans community secure an honorable position in the society
