Instant grinders save time compared to the traditional grinding machines, which has invariably decreased the need.
Coimbatore: Industrialists in Coimbatore expressed their grief as the demand for instant grinders increases in the city. This, not only reduces the want for traditional grinders but also reduces the taste of the batter ground out from stoneless instant grinders.
Idly and Dosa are traditional food of South India, especially the Tamil people. Coimbatore is the major center for the manufacturing and production of wet grinders and their spare parts. There are 1000 industries and 3000 spare part producers, a total of 4000 industries operate in the city in which over 50 thousand people are directly or non-directly employed. The grinders range from 4000 rupees to two lakhs, depending upon the facilities and advancements. This is slightly disturbed in recent days as the demand for instant grinders has increased. These instant grinders cut corners hugely.
The COWMA CLUSTER head, Sasta M Raja states, “The traditional food of Tamil people, the idli and dosa are the go-to food for not just the people here but across countries as well. The batter grinding processes were complicated during the earlier days, however, the advent of ‘Table Top’, ‘Tilting’ grinders with rock-wheels eased the process. This process now has been further cut short as people prefer instant batters (ready-made) owing to the difficulties in cleaning these grinders.
On the other hand, the sellers of ready-made batter have turned towards instant grinders, which saves time and helps them grind in large amounts. The instant grinders do not have the rock wheel, and necessary raw materials shall be put simultaneously unlike the traditional wet grinders.”
This process, states M Raja, makes the batter lose its taste. The instant grinders were much purchased in the northern states, however, the demand has increased in the south now, which worries the manufacturers mildly.
