Coimbatore: Citizen Voice Coimbatore in a petition requested restoration of Olden days British Era Railway Line in which Legendary Nilgiri Express and one of the olden days long distance train slip coaches of Mettupalayam - Peshawar Grand trunk express Chungs passed.
This Bye-pass line connects Coimbatore – Podanur line & Irugur – Podanur line. In fact, this is the first Railway line to Coimbatore Jn,.laid in the year 1891 which is just 1.15 km. This rail link was dismantled when the Coimbatore- Irugur line laid via Peelamedu. Once this rail link is restored, it will reduce 5 km distance and save around 20 minutes running time towards Erode Jn,.
They said, "When North Coimbatore Railway station or Mettupalayam Railway station upgraded, it is possible to extend some of the originating trains of Coimbatore to there without loco reversal. This link is essential to restoring balanced future developments. They also said, apart from the double line between Coimbatore Jn,. and Podanur Jn,. there is a third line south of Coimbatore Jn. which is for only shunting purposes and ends just half KM before the starting point of the above said Bye-pass line.
This can be connected without touching the main line. It reduces the traffic congestion at Coimbatore Jn,. by avoiding trains waiting at home signals and also helps future circular railway lines. It is important to attend to this small line of restoration before encroachments’ crop up further since land belongs to Railways. Land survey has to be done immediately with the coordination of District Administration. The restoration work can be assigned at the zonal level itself and it is advantageous for the originating train services to meet the ever-increasing needs of Coimbatore Railway station."
