Hurricane Gulab: Thundershowers likely in 6 districts including Coimbatore and Nilgiris

Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts likely to get thundershowers on Monday. Ghats to receive moderate rainfall.


Coimbatore: The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains in six districts in Tamil Nadu on Monday.

The Director of the Chennai Meteorological Center, Puviarasan stated in a press release, "Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts will experience thundershowers at two places today. Districts along the Western Ghats, in the southern districts will receive moderate rainfall today.

In the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts, there will be heavy rain with thunder and lightning at one or two places tomorrow. Other districts along the Western Ghats will receive moderate rainfall. There is a possibility of moderate rain across the state on the September 29 and 30. As of yesterday morning, the maximum rainfall in the state in 24 hours was 13 cm in Marakanadu, Villupuram district. There will be light to moderate rain in some places in Chennai today. The maximum temperature recorded was 33 degrees Celsius."

Meanwhile, Hurricane Gulab which formed in the northern part of the Bay of Bengal, moved near Kalingapatnam and Gopalpur on Sunday night. It has been forecasted to weaken into a deep depression on Monday, after crossing the coast at midnight. Strong winds at speeds of up to 55 kmph are expected in the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Mannar and parts of southwestern Bengal, Kerala, Lakshadweep and southeastern Arabian Sea. Therefore, fishermen have been warned not to venture into the above mentioned areas.
