Information Minister Saminathan and Adi Dravidar Welfare Minister Kayalvizhi attended the 123rd Birthday Celebration of Pagutharivalar Kavirayar Udumalai Narayanakavi held in Udumalai and paid homage to his statue by wearing garlands and sprinkling flowers
Tirupur: Born in 1899 in the village of Poolavadi near Udumalai, Narayanakavi became interested in Tamil after meeting Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiar at the age of 15.
Due to his interest in poetry, he went to Madurai and composed various poems and stories in cinema and plays. He was associated with scholar Anna, Kalaignar Karunanidhi, Bharathidasan, Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram, poet Kannadasan Kavimani Desiyavinayakam Pillai, MGR and NS Krishnan and joined the Dravidian movement.
Inspired by Periyar's ideas, he has composed songs on social justice, equality, feminism and rationality. He wrote some of the most popular Tamil drama and film songs in films like Kannaki Maha Maya Krishnabhakti, Velaikari, Sorkkavasal, Parasakthi. He was honored with the Sahitya Ratnaga Award on behalf of the Sangeetha Nataka Sangam. He died of old age in his hometown in 1981 at the age of 82. A mandapam was built in his memory in Udumalai in 2001 by the then Chief Minister Kalaignar M Karunanidhi.
