He enquired whether the Coimbatore Racecourse and other areas were being provided with the necessary safety equipment and workload as the Smart City works were taking place and the corporation's cleaning staff was facing additional workload. Following that, he visited the vaccination camp for cleaning staff held at the Central Regional Office of the Corporation.
Later, he presented certificates and safety equipment to the cleaning staff at Siddapudur Corporation School. Following this he told the media that he has come to Tamil Nadu for a two day tour on behalf of the National Sanitation Personnel Commission. The study is being conducted in Coimbatore today following a study meeting held in the Nilgiris yesterday.
After attending an event organized on behalf of the Coimbatore Corporation, he heard the grievances of the sanitary staff. At the time, cleaning staff complained that their deposit had been seized after working for the corporation for more than ten years and that they did not know what its status was. He has promised to take appropriate action along with the Corporation Commissioner. Certificates have been awarded to sanitary workers who have excelled during the Coronavirus period.
He said, "This is the first time in Tamil Nadu that such a certificate of appreciation has been given. Safety equipment is one of the most important for cleaning staff. My congratulations to the Commissioner of the Corporation who took steps to ensure that they are duly delivered to the employees in Coimbatore. Across Tamil Nadu, cleaning staff are paid less than prescribed. Contract workers face a variety of problems such as overwork and low pay.
Therefore, the Government of Tamil Nadu has abolished this contract staffing system and introduced the permanent staffing system to be implemented. If the Tamil Nadu government sets up a committee headed by a retired judge to study the status of contract employees, they will be able to resolve the issues they are facing. The cleaning staff, who were appointed during the last AIADMK regime, have now been sacked. Thus, a cleaning worker named Nadiya has committed suicide. Similarly, there have been complaints that many people across Tamil Nadu have been affected. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu should intervene and take appropriate action in this regard. It is not right to dismiss a party for any reason."
District Collector Sameeran, Corporation Commissioner Rajagopal Sunkara, Superintendent of Police Selva Nagaratnam and many others were present at the discussion.
