Tirupur: The Annai Department Store owned by Arputharaj from Tiruchendur in Palladam, Tirupur district operates on NGR Road in the heart of Palladam.
Over a 100 people from the southern districts work and reside at this department store. As usual on Tuesday night, the shop staff locked the shop and went upstairs to sleep.
On Wednesday morning smoke suddenly billowed from the basement of the five-storey department store. Firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire with the help of more than five private water trucks. Several lakh worth of groceries and home appliances were completely damaged in the sudden fire.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the fire accident took place due to overheating of a machine which was used to stick polythene covers. The staff had left the store without putting away the machine after work, on Tuesday night. The fire accident caused a stir on the NGR road in the heart of Palladam city.
